While blue is always popular, current trends highlight pale blues and also more saturated options; Valspar named its cool-undertoned sapphire shade “Encore” 2025 Color of the Year.
How to decide on the right shade of blue for you? Here are a few tips to get started:
- Lighter blues: pale blues are great in entryways, laundry rooms, hallways, and also bedrooms and bathrooms. I painted my bedroom and adjoining bathroom in Benjamin Moore’s Whispering Spring. This pale coastal blue features green undertones, and is not as bright as Benjamin Moore’s Morning Sky Blue, which was originally my first choice, until I saw samples. It’s a very pleasant color, but seemed more suitable for a baby’s nursery, or a Greek restaurant.
- Dark blues: one of my favorite choices for kitchen cabinets (image above). See how Sherwin-Williams’ Blustery Sky looks in this transitional kitchen refresh, with its majestic blue-gray undertone. Dark blues are versatile, working well in both social gathering places and retreats like a bedroom. Remember to keep lighting in mind, as undertones in dark colors show through more in brightly lit spaces.
- Warm blue colors work well in both exteriors and interiors, and are often used when a historic look is desired, such as Sherwin-Williams’ Powder Blue. Undertones in warm blue options are especially important to consider in east and west facing rooms, as the paint color will shift with the changing sunlight throughout the day.
